One of the most exciting things about having a hot tub is getting to share it with family and friends. If you’ve been wondering whether it is safe for your children to get in the spa, read on for helpful guidelines.

Check the temperature

Young children are more sensitive to warm water, so a temperature that feels comfortable for you may be too hot for the kids. Dropping the spa temperature to 98 degrees will be more comfortable — and safer — for kids.

Check their height

Children should be tall enough for their head to be completely out of the water when they stand with their feet on the bottom of the hot tub. You can also add a stool or booster seat to a spa seat for a young child to sit on to keep their upper body out of the water while they enjoy the hot tub.

Stay hydrated

Water, flavored water, and juice are all great options to help the kids stay hydrated while they’re using the spa. We lose fluids quicker in warm water, so it’s important to stay hydrated while in the hot tub and to continue to drink water after getting out.

Be mindful of the time

Adults can enjoy the spa for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, take a break to cool down, and then get back in. It’s important to be more diligent with how long children stay in the hot tub, again because their bodies are more sensitive to the heat. With the water set at 98 degrees, 15 minutes is the maximum time that a child should enjoy the spa before getting out to cool off and rehydrate.

Always supervise

An adult should always be present when children are using the hot tub. When the hot tub is not in use, lock the spa cover using the locking cover latches as an added layer of protection so that children do not get in the water unsupervised.

Hot tubs are a great place to spend quality time with the kids, and with some simple guidelines everyone will stay safe and have fun!
