My friends just put in a brand new hot tub and invited some people over for a party. It sounds like a lot of fun, but I’ll be honest… I haven’t been to the gym since before Facebook was invented. I’m not feeling brave enough to wear a swimsuit in front of my friends. Should I say I already have plans that day?

Hi Shy,

It may be overwhelming to imagine going to a party in your swimsuit, but maybe we can help guide you a little out of your comfort zone. There are a lot of stylish (and modest!) swimsuit options that can help you feel comfortable and cute. Swim dresses have become very popular because they offer more coverage than traditional one-pieces. And if you’re not feeling up for standing around the patio in your swimsuit, there are so many trendy cover ups now that are designed to give a flowy, relaxed look. Ask yourself what’s holding you back. How many times will you be able to make up excuses for turning down hot tub party invites? These friends clearly are looking forward to your company and care about you, so simply addressing that you’re feeling a little self-conscious can help lighten your mood. You may be surprised to find that your other friends were feeling self-conscious too! If you’re still feeling unsure, accept the invitation and simply bring a swimsuit along with you. It can be tempting to show up in pants and a top, planning to enjoy the patio and hang out while friends are in and out of the spa. But once you arrive at the party, you may just find that all of your fears were for nothing! Bringing a swimsuit just in case gives you the opportunity to hop in if the fun of the festivities changes your mind.
