May 25th is National Towel Day, and here are some easy tips for keeping your favorite beach towels vibrant and soft season after season.

Let towels dry fully after using

Kids plus water equals … piles of wet towels. Having a towel rack nearby can make it easier for everyone to find a place to hang their towels. Because beach towels tend to be much larger than bath towels, they can take longer to dry (meaning a greater chance of mildew). But letting towels dry fully after using can keep them fresh. Choose a spot that’s out of direct sunlight to help minimize fading.

Hang on racks, not hooks

Even the more rugged fibers of beach towels can be stretched, warped, or torn when they’re hung on hooks. A towel bar, towel ladder or rack lets your towels air out without placing strain on any one area of fabric.

Launder Gently

If you air dry towels after using them, they shouldn’t require heavy-duty scrubbing and washing to freshen up. Cold water and a gentle detergent is usually all you’ll need. Bleach and fabric softeners can damage towels’ absorbency, so skip them for the beach towels. Tumble drying on low heat can fluff and freshen the towels so they’re ready for your next soak.

Rotate through your towels

After washing, put the most recently used towels at the bottom of the towel pile to help all of your beach towels get the same amount of use.

With a little TLC, your beach towels can bring you years of use.
