Do you have travel plans this summer? Whether you’re going out of town for a week or taking a longer trip, your local dealer can take the guesswork out of preparing your spa for vacation!

Eric Spurr at Water Way Pool Company in Portage, IN, shared his answers to common questions from a vacationing hot tub owner.

We’re heading out of town. What should I do about water chemistry?

The simplest way to check your water chemistry is to visit your local Dream Maker Spas dealer who will have the tools and techniques to test your water sample. Spurr says, “As a company we always recommend that a vacationing homeowner gets water analyzed in our computerized testing software to get all acidity and chlorine/bromine levels as close to perfect as possible.”

Can I keep my spa running when I’m out of town?

Dream Maker Spas manufactured before 2017 can be set on Sleep Mode before you go out of town to keep energy costs low while your spa is not in use.

All 2017 and newer Stonehenge Crossover and Cabana Collection Spas run on a fixed Standard Mode. Because these spas run so efficiently, they can be left running on standard mode even when you are out of town during the warmer months. Just remember to close all air controls and turn off the waterfall to help water maintain water temperature longer. Your spa’s insulation and snug-fitting super seal cover trap in the heat to keep your energy cost low. Depending on the length of time that you’ll be away, you may choose to lower your spa’s set temperature — especially during the warmer months.

Spurr recommends increasing the filter duration so water is being cycled in the system while you’re out of town.

How can I secure my cover?

You can take the precaution of using the supplied cover locks on your spa to keep the cover in place during strong summer storms.

Though Spurr says, “Within my 17 years of working at Waterway Pool Co Inc. I’ve never heard of uninvited guests using a spa while the homeowner is out of town,” he agreed that locking your spa’s cover latches is also a simple way to provide an extra layer of security while you’re away.

Ahhh I’m back from a loooonnng vacation and feeling relaxed. Now what?
